Steady Steps: Falls Management Programme
What is it?
A 24 week exercise programme designed to help individuals increase their strength and balance and therefore reduces the likelihood of falling.
The programme is a self-referral.
The 24 week programme includes:
- Tailored seated and standing exercises
- Floor exercises (if appropriate)
- Strength exercises using bands, balls, light weights and techniques for getting down and up from the floor
Alongside health and care partners, we are implementing a free postural stability exercise programme called Steady Steps with support from each of the localities across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.
Steady Steps is a 24-week programme tailored to those who have previously fallen or worry about falling and is designed to help improve balance and stability. Delivered by Level 4 specialised Postural Stability Instructors, the classes are tailored to each individual's abilities and will progress in difficulty throughout the programme.
People are eligible for the Steady Steps programme if they are aged over 65, are at risk of falling (e.g. have a high fear or falling or poor balance) or have fallen less than three times in the past 12 months.
For the advanced Steady Steps plus sessions please contact your local co-ordinator for more information.
'After four weeks into the course it became noticeable that the continued movements had freed the muscles of my left side considerably'.
'Having attend the programme I can now reach further up my back with both arms and I can turn easier'.
'I now go out independently again. I don't use a stick now unless my hip is painful. I move around the house much more quickly and get up and down more easily'.
Please see here for all the current classes running.
